My Dream Car: The Audi R8

by Harry Runningdeer on February 3, 2010

“The slowest car we have ever built”.

Audis intelligent little strapline was the first thing to cathcy my eye about the R8, and it was quickly followed by the smooth and clever advert. Despite the fact that I was falling alseep on the sofa, the car being constructed still managed to catch my eye. It didn’t take long to become hooked – I only had to see it for a second.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, I am not the only person in the world who loves Audi’s lovely R8. Even still, the web is full of people jibbering and jabbering about the R8 – and back then everything from Top Gear to car blogs couldn’t stop talking about its good looks. The Audi R8 is everyones favourite car, from grannies to racing drivers and everyone inbetween.

Sure they aren’t the slimmest cars around, but Audis are always attractive. In my head Audi are always going to have a certain bullish quality to them, a feeling of power and determination that never fails to convince. The Audi TT started life as an average car, and then soon was improved to become a wonderful coupe. It seemed a simple step up to create this astounding car.

The Audi R8 looks stunning. With that impressively aerodynamic design and such a low supercar build, the Audi R8 really is intended for the fast open road. Not only that, but the car is so undeniably Audi that you would know it at a glance – the grille especially has that incredibly distinctive Audi shape. For me personally, this shape could be a strong competitor for the nicest car ever made, and I never fail to gasp when I see one drive past on the street. As with all supercars, one isn’t enough. Audi are now releasing the R8 Spyder, just to carry on the supercar trend.

All this and we haven’t even got beneath the bonnet – but don’t worry, the V10 lurking there is worth the wait. No matter what the stats and specifications actually say, it is the car in real life that tells you everything you could ever want to.

Impressively, if you want to own a used Audi R8 rather than an expensive new one, the cost is quite dramatically reduced. I have actually come across these in showrooms for about £65k, a price that is a lot lower than many other competitor supercars on the market. That initial spend is a lot lower than perhaps you would have thought, meaning that more people can buy it than would have been expected. For those of us who dream of owning this car but who can’t, a simple used Audi will have to do the job for in the meantime!
