What is the best used car to purchase?

by Admin on December 26, 2008

Jon L asked:

I am trying to spend anywhere from $0 to $6,000 on a used car and don’t know how much money to spend.

What is the best dollar amount to increase the following ratio:
life of car to dollars spent.

Any other suggestions on making my purchase would be greatly appreciated.

Toyota Corolla’s are gold right now! You can snatch up a 1999 corolla for that amount. Great gas mileage and you can drive it until the wheels fall off! =) Good luck!

Everybody will tell you either a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic, but if you’re like me then those cars are effortlessly boring and look hideous. I’m actually in the same situation and I have about the same price range. I’d be looking for either a Honda CRX Del-Sol (like a Civic, but it looks much sharper) or a non-turbo’d Toyota Supra or Soarer. The 4 litre V8 Lexus version of the Soarer would do nicely. The Del-Sol is lacking a bit in power but nothing a new exhaust or ECU wouldn’t fix, which wouldn’t really cost that much. The Supra and Soarer have more power, but the Soarer (Lexus version) has a leather interior and 12-stacker CD-Player if that floats your boat. If reliability is a concern, don’t drive it unnecessarily hard, it’ll ruin any car quicker than if you drive carefully and give it TLC.

Everyone is going to say Honda, or Toyota. Your problem is that you only have half the money needed at 6,000 to buy a new enough one. Believe it or not your best buy for your money would be a 1998 or newer Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis. They are built like a truck and will get 24 mpg on the highway. A 2nd alternative would be a 2003 or newer Ford Taurus with under 50,000 miles. The Taurus was greatly improved in the later years and resale value is low enough that you can get a clean one for your $6,000.
